This needs to be my life right now...

I wish i looked this composed and elegant when working.
Instead i'm consciously avoiding it or tearing my hair out and snapping when i do.
WHY CAN'T I WORK?!

Decorative Jargon

I really enjoy doing labour intensive work, that almost makes me feel
like i'm going to go blind i have to concentrate so much.

The above work is part of my self-directed work on medical quackery and spin.
although what i've done so far seems to be what other people have told me to
do and, by going through the motions, i've lost a sense of WHY i wanted to do it.

By highlighting elements of serious side effects which are tucked away in the
DECORATIVE JARGON of small print in medical leaflets that are designed to be
as offputting to read as possible thus disguising potential hazards of painkillers
like nurofen which can result in heart attack or stroke // infertility in women.

Suffice to say after looking at it properly, the top type size on each is too
small to be properly legible (or communicate what it's supposed to...effectively
the point of my degree....) and the bottom of the first can only be [sort of] read
if small or far away. and that the fact that the one legible one is off centre.

Hopefully i'll be putting more work up here soon!

here's hoping though.

I seem to be trying my damndest to fail this year.
And by that i mean this dissertation is trying to kill me.

Words of Wisdom

It's probably quiet telling that i enjoy writing when i don't have to do it so the process of writing this 3000 word draft is like pulling teeth. While typing up some (seemingly relevant) lectures from last term i came across a talk by Karsten Schmidt where he talks about Anton's speech in Ratatouille. I haven't seen the film (yet) but this is good:

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defence of the new. The world is often unkind to new talents, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new; an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking, is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, "Anyone can cook". But I realise — only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.

Winter of the Witch

"for the next two weeks, every night she played old music...and every day she would sit in bed reading the newspapers. The old witch became gloomy and depressed; the news was always bad. And none of the want ad's ever seemed to want an old witch"

This weather makes me feel like i'm constantly on the
verge of falling asleep. Work doesn't seem to be going
anywhere at all... so hello magic blueberry pancakes

I started drawing again

A bit sad that this is the first proper work post
after loads of youtube videos.

I like how the mask looks like the little boy's (a bit?) below.

Wild Beasts

Despite a couple of years of quiet obsession, i seem to have been
physically unable to listen to anything but them this summer.

As someone amusingly wrote on youtube:

"Thats a voice that can and will impregnate you".

Well done English National Opera.
A really interesting, thought-provoking

this would translate to real proper life.

LOST WORK

my Space//Place book went missing from our end of year show in
the FdA room, and since it was there when I was invigilating on thursday it must have gone on friday or more likely Saturday when
no one was put down to look after the show...

so either it's been misplaced or someone's decided to steal
the product of two months of really hard work. it doesn't even
have my name on it.

what a fucking joke.

YCN Student Awards- Fedrigoni Brief

I don't think i put these on here after i finished it, which was just over 2 months ago. Put into practice my interest in materials and processes... although it wouldn't be a bad thing if i didn't screenprint for a while. OH that was a stressful day.

Close Up Etchings

that i made for my outcome 2 wall piece.
I was etching for about 7 hours to get these
4 plates done last week and i'm really
happy with how they came out.

Space is often seen as scientific, whereas place is personal. So collection is based around the idea of ‘Science of Memory’ highlights areas of the brain that deal with memory which I made by etching and relief printing which I liked as the process of printmaking gives an aged quality without being a pastiche.

Penguin Great Ideas

i've got my eye on a few from the collection.

"The Science of Memory'

Outcome 2 is a physical manifestation of my findings on space and place,
I wanted to explore how interaction transforms a space into a place.
The bare wall is an impersonal space that is transformed into place when
viewers physically interact and place the objects on the wall.
Interactive element is important as I want people to impose there own
idea of how the objects should be arranged and how the space should look.

I AM A FREE WOMAN

of sorts. for a bit at least. I can just lie in bed!
and watch my so called life! and not feel guilty!
can you sense the excitement?

These are pictures of my FMP outcome 1; a book split into 2 that deal with space (abstraction, confusion) and place (specific areas on the page- columns, margins) respectively.
